For some people, the idea of a sleep study doesn’t sound all that exciting. However, for both the doctors that conduct them and the patients that receive them, they’re the beginning of a brand-new era of restfulness.
Sleep studies allow doctors to determine what kind of issues could be affecting a patient, aiding them in designing effective treatment plans. If you have one coming up, here’s how you should get ready for it.
Preparing for a Sleep Study: Weeks Out
One thing that can be incredibly valuable in diagnosing sleep-related issues is a sleep diary. This is a detailed record of your sleep schedule, quality of rest, and any factors that could be affecting the sleep that you’re getting in one way or another. If you have a sleep study coming up in a few weeks, it may be good to start one in order to give your doctors complete information about your situation.
You will also need to have a conversation with your physician about any medications you’re taking. Depending on which ones you’re taking, it may be necessary to wean you off of them beforehand in order to ensure the accuracy of the test.
Packing Your Bags
Naturally you’ll be staying overnight in your doctor’s office for a sleep study, meaning that you’ll need to pack a bag. This should include a set of comfortable pajamas, some toiletries, and a change of clothes for the next day. You can even pack your favorite pillow or blanket if you want to ensure that you’ll fall asleep easily.
You should also be sure to bring your insurance cards and a list of any medications you’re taking, as both will be necessary for your doctor.
The Day Of
When you’re finally ready to head to your doctor’s office for the night, you should do everything you can to make sure that you’ll get a good night’s sleep. This means avoiding drinking any coffee after 2pm and abstaining from any alcohol. You should also try to avoid taking any naps that day.
Otherwise, do what you would normally do—eat dinner at a normal time, exercise as you normally would, and feel free to go to work the day of.
